Rainbow Tribe is no longer in operation. Due to other committments I am no longer making rainbow clothing or other items to sell. Sorry to disappoint. If you want to know where to buy rainbow gear or where to buy rainbow fabric/ribbon/motifs etc, you can email me at dykes.with.tykes@hotmail.com

What do we do?

Ok, so we have come up against some resistance to our business name. So much so that we have been denied a stall at a local market selling kids clothing, and we are not able to register our business name without making a big song and dance.

So we have three options:

1. Ignore those who are offended and keep the name. It is catchy - yes it is meant to shock you a little, but it also plays on the name of another well-known group in the gay and lesbian community - Dykes on Bikes. It also is very representative of who we are - two women in a relationship raising a child together.

2. Go all conservative and use an alternate business name instead. The one we most like that goes well with our logo is Rainbow Tribe.

3. Go with two business names - one for gay and lesbian events as Dykes with Tykes and one for more mainstream events as Rainbow Tribe.

I am a bit unsure as to which way to jump. Really all I want to do is make funky kids clothes. What is in a name? We are fortunate enough that as we are only just starting out we can change easily at this point. I'd love to know what you think please - do we change? If so, what do you think of Rainbow Tribe? There is a poll over on the right if you want to be short and sweet and anonymous, or leave us a comment below if you want to tell us your reasoning.

We have enabled comment moderation so we can see the comments before we let them be published. Don't let this put you off, we just want to filter out the nasty crazy people.

Cheers
Marijke

If as you say your focus is on what you do rather than who you are then change the name. If you want to be political and a bit more in-your-face to make a statement then leave it as it is. Me? I'd leave it, but I like being controversial! Amy

Change it. Rainbow Tribe is catchy, subtle and inclusive of all walks of life. Tash (Gungahlin)

If you are st on the name keep it!!
If you are not too bothered by the name then I would go with Rainbow Tribe and as Tash said, it's more inclusive of others. I personally like Rainbow Tribe better, I think it would appeal to more customers like dads/coparents.

Thanks for the responses guys! We really appreciate your support.

We have pretty much now decided to change the business name to Rainbow Tribe. As Lisa and Tash have said, it includes everyone. Part of me wants to rage against the machine, but the last few sleepless nights (not about this - Gabs has been sick) has zapped us of a lot of energy!

And I guess Rainbow Tribe is actually more us. We aren't in-your-face and we don't like to offend people. We will be keeping the slogan Dykes with Tykes alive on some of our t-shirts and bags, and at this stage we will keep it as our internet address and email address.

We are still more than happy to receive feedback on this issue too.

Thanks again!
